Hi everyone,
I have a patient who's looking for over-the-counter alternatives to Lasix (furosemide) due to some side effects they've been experiencing. They have high blood pressure and are retaining fluids. Does anyone know of any safe, effective OTC options? I want to ensure that whatever we recommend is both safe and beneficial.
Thanks in advance!

Hi MedMentor123,
That's a tricky one. Lasix is a potent diuretic, and finding an OTC alternative can be difficult due to its potency and the medical conditions it treats. Over-the-counter diuretics like cranberry juice or certain herbal supplements might help with mild water retention but are not nearly as strong as furosemide.
The patient should consider:
However, they should always consult with their doctor before starting any new supplement to ensure there are no contraindications with other medications they might be on. It’s important to monitor blood pressure and fluid levels closely if switching from Lasix to something less potent.

Thank you, HealthGuru87!
That's helpful information. I'll discuss these options with my patient and emphasize the need for monitoring their blood pressure and fluid retention closely. Do you know of any specific brands or dosages that are generally considered safe?

You're welcome, MedMentor123!
When it comes to herbal diuretics:
Dandelion Root: Look for supplements like "Nature’s Way Dandelion Root Extract" or "Gaia Herbs Dandelion Leaf & Root". Dosages vary by brand; generally, 400-600 mg of dandelion root extract is taken twice daily.
Hawthorn Berry: Brands such as "Herb Pharm Hawthorn Liquid Extract" or "Solgar Hawthorn Berries" are commonly used. The usual dose is around 160–320 mg two to three times per day.
For cranberry juice, brands like Ocean Spray offer pure cranberry juices that can be consumed daily in moderation (about 8-16 oz/day).
Remember, while these supplements might help with fluid retention and have additional health benefits, they do not replace the need for medical supervision. It’s crucial to regularly check blood pressure and consult a healthcare provider if symptoms worsen or new issues arise.
